The Fire Department provides all risk emergency services, as well as public education programs, fire prevention, and life safety measures to the City's residents. These services support the Fire Department's mission of effectively preserving lives and protecting property. The department provides Emergency Services, which include pre-hospital emergency medical services at the Emergency Medical Technician I (EMT-1) level; response to structural, vehicular and vegetation fires, hazardous materials response, water rescue, trench rescue, public assistance and other emergencies. The department also administers a hazardous materials business plan program in cooperation with Santa Barbara County.

Description Of Responsibilities
The Fire Chief is responsible for policy and general direction for the Fire Department; provides administrative support for senior fire management staff, and actively participates as a member of the City management team. The Chief represents the City regarding fire and life safety issues on a regional and statewide basis. Additionally, the Chiefs' office provides financial oversight, advanced planning, intra agency coordination, and deals with issues of Community concern.

2023-24 Goals and Objectives
1. Develop and implement a one-year training calendar to meet operational needs and to standardize training across three shifts for all sworn personnel. Training Captain is necessary to develop the calendar and coordinate training.
2. Evaluate and update 25 percent of current policies to address department’s current and future needs and to meet industry standards.
3. Initiate design of Fire Department Headquarters for future building construction, to replace the outdated structure.
4. Improve support for mental wellness for fire service members through the acquisition of a therapy dog.
5. Revise and expand the commercial building fire inspection program.
6. Reevaluate the assembly occupancy fire inspection program. Confirm that all assembly occupancies are identified and inspected on an annual basis.
7. Conduct detailed condition and function assessments of each fire facility and give annual updates to the City Manager.
8. Streamline the Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighting (ARFF) certification process and train additional personnel to meet ARFF qualifications, to enhance succession planning.
9. Develop a plan for Acting Engineer and Captain Academies to provide training for members, enhance skills, and prepare for succession planning.
10. Assess the departmental impact of the Santa Barbara County Ambulance RFP contract. Explore options and feasibility of providing facilities for ambulance crews to enhance community service.
