Maribel Aguilera-Hernandez serves as Councilmember - District 4. She served on the City's Planning Commission for eight years from January 2015 to December 2022.

She is a partner at the firm of Kirk & Simas, PLC, and practices business and real estate law. She volunteers to be appointed by the courts to represent children. She and her husband Noe Hernandez have one young daughter.

She is the daughter of immigrants who came to America looking for a better life. She was born on the Central Coast and is a resident of Santa Maria since she was 5 years old. She attended local elementary schools and Santa Maria High School. After high school, she left to attend college. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Psychology. She attended law school and earned her Juris Doctorate.

Ms. Aguilera Hernandez has dedicated her life to public service. While in college she served on the Student Body Association as Secretary, on the Student Housing Association as President, and served on the Psychology Honors Society. She volunteered to tutor local first graders in reading and math. Her interest in the study of the law came after taking a psychology and Law class. She interned at the Riverside City Attorney’s Office and the Public Defender’s during her last year in college.

Upon returning to Santa Maria, she wanted to contribute to the community that she grew up in and worked for North County Rape Crisis as a Sexual Assault Response Team Advocate, where she was on call 24/7 and assisted victims by providing crisis intervention, working with the families and collaborating with law enforcement. Before attending law school, she worked for Future Leaders of America where she managed and executed a leadership and college preparation program which included alcohol and drug prevention for youth.

While attending law school she worked full-time. She worked at the Legal Aid Foundation of Santa Barbara County as an intake coordinator where she assisted attorneys to help survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and elder abuse. During law school, she was elected Student Bar President and Tribune for Delta Theta Phi, a professional law fraternity.

Upon graduation from law school, she worked at energy companies on the Central Coast for several years as a Landman conducting due diligence, title work, drafting easements, licenses, and right of ways, working with property owners to develop creative solutions for land use problems, working with environmental (quality control) department and operations department to assist with business development.

In 2014 she returned to the Legal Aid Foundation as a lawyer to assist victims of domestic violence with full legal representation. She also worked at California Rural Legal Assistance. She then started her own law firm where she practiced business, real estate, oil and gas, and juvenile dependency law. She joined Kirk & Simas as an associate and in a few years became a partner.

She has a very large family that lives in Santa Maria - her parents, siblings, uncles, aunts and cousins live in town.

She and her husband are very active in the community, and they volunteer at and attend many local non-profit events.
