His law enforcement career began with the Carpinteria Police Department before he came to Santa Maria, where in December 1972 he started as a patrol officer.

He was promoted to Sergeant in December 1983, and in 1992 was assigned to the Detective Bureau as the Narcotic Sergeant. This position had many additional responsibilities; he worked with detectives, managed and supervised cases, had oversight over Records, Property/Evidence and the Police Lab, and worked with the Gang Suppression Team. Mr. Cordero was assigned back to patrol in about 1995 and worked as a Patrol Sergeant. In 2002 he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant.
