810 West Church Street
Public Works Operations

The maintenance and operation of the City's transportation infrastructure is of critical importance to the community. This network of roads, sidewalks, street lights, traffic signals and drainage systems serves every resident on a daily basis. Oversight is the responsibility of the Street Maintenance Division.

Every year, the City and a hired contractor perform street maintenance called chip seal on dozens of City streets. Chip seal is a thin layer of road resurfacing that protects and extends pavement life.

Driving Tips for Roundabouts

Roundabouts are the large, circular islands in the center of intersections. They are used in place of traffic signals or signs. Santa Maria has roundabouts located along Bradley Road and nearby streets in the Crossroads Shopping Center. There are roundabouts in Santa Barbara and elsewhere in the state.

Drivers approaching a roundabout must slow down and yield to pedestrians and vehicles already in the roundabout. Once in the roundabout, you have the right-of-way. Signal before exiting and yield to pedestrians.

Statistics from before and after roundabout construction show a drop in crash rates compared to signalized intersections. Because roundabout traffic is slow, collisions that do occur are less likely to cause injury.

With roundabouts there is no waiting for red lights, no wasted green light time, and with slower speeds, users can take advantage of smaller gaps in traffic.
