Water Awareness Month originated during the 1987-1992 drought to help educate residents about the efficient use of water resources. In light of the recent drought year in California, water suppliers throughout the state, including the City of Santa Maria, activated water restrictions and intensified water conservation efforts. 

The Utilities Department, along with other water purveyors in Santa Barbara County, observe the month of May as Water Awareness Month to educate residents and businesses and to encourage the wise use of water. 

The City takes advantage of Water Awareness Month to promote all aspects of water including conservation, supply, quality, and distribution. Water Awareness Month is highlighted on the City’s website, the Utilities Department Facebook page, and throughout the community via various advertisements.  

Staff also distributes complimentary water conservation kits to City residents, which include ultra-low flow showerheads, shower and hose timers, hose shut-off nozzles, moisture meter probes, toilet tank banks, and informative brochures (while supplies last).
